I just upgraded my first generation iPhone yesterday from firmware version from 1.1.4 to 2.1 using Pwnage Tool! Thanks to the iPhone-Dev Team!
My first attempt was not successful because I missed out something but I got it running after my 3rd try. I will be posting some instructions on how to use the Pwnage Tool in my next blog.

My brother gave me his standard UK iphone 2g with 2.1 software and I want to use my vodafone PAYG simm in UK.
I have read TONS and am building up nerve to do the pwning process, but have a query:
When the phone is pwned people seem to find the new simm is not recognised - solution is deleting some internal files using iphone browser, that seems to be a PC only app. What do you need on a Mac?

Most people often don't get any carrier signal simply because they have missed out some steps in the process.
Make sure you have do the following:
1. Follow the step by step guide.
2. Use Pwnage Tool in Expert Mode.
3. Make your you have selected the proper choices in "Step 7"
4. Make sure you select "No" in step 17.
